A meeting of the Janata Dal (Secular) leaders of north Karnataka region held at the former Minister and MLC Basavaraj Horatti's farmhouse near Hubli on Friday discussed the strengthening of the party in the region by bringing former Janata Parivar leaders back to the party fold.
JD(S) leaders, including A.B. Patil, Basanagowda Patil Yatnal, Basavaraj Patil Anwari, P.C. Siddanagoudar, Somanagowda Patil, B.H. Bannikod, Venkatarao Nadagowda, Mallikarjun Khuba and others took part in the meeting.
The meeting focussed on how to bring the former leaders who had joined the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party back to the JD(S).
Briefing presspersons on the meeting, Mr. Horatti, Mr. Anwari and Mr. A.B. Patil said that the Janata Parivar leaders who had joined the Congress and the BJP for various reasons had not received due recognition in those parties. “While they are being completely sidelined in the Congress, the BJP is also not doing justice to them as it is overloaded. It was felt at the meeting that the time was ripe to begin efforts of reuniting the Janata Parivar leaders,” they said.
Another issue discussed at the meet was bringing together members of the Lingayat community who had been divided on the basis of subcastes.
Lingayat focus
The Lingayat community has not received adequate representation and recognition in State politics and the reason for that was lack of unity among the community members, the JD(S) leaders said.
They said the meeting resolved to form a core committee to achieve unity among the Lingayats. Similar core committees could be formed with regard to other communities also so that a network of various communities would be made.
Panel
They said several leaders of the Lingayat community and also of other backward communities in north Karnataka had supported the move and had also promised to extend support by setting aside their differences.
Onus on Horatti
Mr. Anwari and Mr. Patil said that the meeting had authorised Mr. Horatti to take leadership in this connection.
- Representation of Lingayat community to be addressed
- Core committee to be formed to bring in unity within the community
