India supports a peaceful solution to Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: Goa Commissioner for NRI Affairs Eduardo Faleiro has said that India has always supported a peaceful solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the right of the Palestinian people to an independent State of Palestine.

Mr. Faleiro was addressing a public meeting for “Solidarity with the Palestinian People” organised by All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation here on Wednesday.

Putting the issue in perspective, Mr. Faleiro quoted Mahatma Gandhi as saying “In my opinion, the Jews have erred grievously in seeking to impose themselves on Palestinians with the aid of America and Britain. Why should they depend on American money or British arms for forcing themselves on an unwelcome land?”

First contact

Mr. Faleiro recalled that as External Affairs Minister earlier, he had established the first official contact on behalf of the Union Government with the Government of Israel when he met Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres in New York in 1992 on instruction from the then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. The recognition of Israel by the Union Government followed, he said.

Before meeting the Israeli Foreign Minister, Mr. Faleiro recalled that he had met Chairman Yasser Arafat, the leader of Palestine Liberation Organisation, who, he said, did not oppose this move of the Union Government.
