SHIMOGA: The “Ikkeri Utsav - 2008”, the nightlong cultural event, is being organised by the Ananya Trust of Bangalore on Saturday on the precincts of the historical Aghoreshwara temple at Ikkeri in Sagar taluk of Shimoga district.

The temple, known for its architecture, is said to have been constructed during the rule of Keladi dynasty. This is the second cultural event being organised by the trust at Ikkeri in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Tourism Department.

Managing trustee R.V. Raghavendra said that the non-profit trust was founded in 1995 under the chairmanship of Kannada writer U.R. Ananthamurthy with to promote classical music in more than one way. “It has been serving the cause of art, especially that of music and musicians, since its inception,” he said. Artistes from Bangalore, Shimoga and other places will perform at the utsav. The dance section includes Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kathak and the music session includes classical vocal recitals by artistes such as T.S. Satyavati and saxophone recital by Sridhar Sagar. The artistes of “Saketa Kalavidaru” of Heggodu in the taluk will present an Yakshagana episode.

The hour-long “Vaadya Vaibhav”, simultaneous performance by veena, flute, kanjari, ghatam and mrudangam artistes, is expected to be the highlight of the event. The utsav starts at 5.30 p.m. and concludes at 5.30 a.m. the next day.
