HC stays UGC notification to Manipal University

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday stayed a notification by the University Grants Commission (UGC) asking Manipal University to refrain from using the word ‘university' in its nomenclature as it was only a deemed university.

The UGC had taken exception to the usage of the word ‘university'. It said the institution was only a deemed university, and therefore it could not use the word university.

Manipal University said when a notification was issued under section 3 of the UGC Act conferring university status, neither the UGC nor any other body could object to the use of the word. It said there was nothing wrong in using the word ‘university' and it had no adverse effect.

Senior advocate Ashok Harnahalli who appeared for Manipal University said the UGC should not have any objection to it.

Justice S. Abdul Nazir stayed the notification and adjourned further hearing of the petition.
