Group clash: 12 more arrested

MADIKERI: Twelve more persons were arrested in connection with group clashes that occurred in Virajpet town in Kodagu on Tuesday taking the total to 27, according to the police here on Thursday. Fifteen persons were taken into custody by the police on Wednesday in connection with the clash.

Superintendent of Police Ramachandra Rao, who is camping in Virajpet town since Tuesday, told The Hindu that the situation had eased and normalcy had returned to the town.

Bandobast, however, continued in the entire town. Local leaders from the two groups involved in the incidents had met the police in the morning, he said. Inspector General of Police (Southern Range), R.P. Sharma, who had camped in the town on Wednesday, returned to Mysore on Thursday.

Virajpet town is among the communally sensitive areas in Kodagu.
