Five get life term

Prompt action of the police on a complaint of dacoity and murder led the Bangalore (Rural) Principal District and Sessions Judge to convict five persons involved in the offence committed near Dobbspet in 2008. Apart from sentencing five persons to life, judge A.V. Chandrashekar on Thursday directed the convicted to pay Rs. 75,000 to a lorry driver, who was attacked.

The names of those who have been convicted are Prem Kumar (23), Shabari Girish (22), Nagaraj alias Naga (22), Dinesh alias Khadari (19) and Chetan (19). They had murdered Ronald Kaph (21), a security guard, and had injured lorry driver Khwaja. Khawaja and Kaph brought 15 tonnes of steel for a company in Dobbspet on November 26, 2008. As he could not unload the steel at night, Khawaja parked the lorry next to Dobbspet flyover. The five-member gang got into the lorry around 3 a.m. on November 27 and attacked Khawaja and Kaph. They threw chilli powder and hit the two with spanners. Prem Kumar drove the lorry towards Shivagange Hills as the remaining four held Khawaja and Kaph. Khawaja, who became unconscious, was thrown in a pond and the dacoits went ahead. Kaph, who had breathed his last, was thrown in another pond, a few metres away from the earlier pond.
