Supply has been suspended owing to shortage of funds: officials

Raichur: Farmers from Raichur taluk staged a dharna here on Wednesday demanding that the district administration take steps for immediate supply of subsidised seeds for kharif sowing.

Nearly 200 farmers, who gathered on the premises of the Agricultural Department here, picketed the officials and demanded supply of seeds. But the officials refused to release seeds saying that the supply had been suspended owing to shortage of funds.

Later, they staged a dharna at the Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding that the district administration issue directions to officials to supply seeds to farmers in keeping with the quantity mentioned in their passbooks. They decided to continue their dharna until they get an assurance. Chamarasa Malipatil, Vice-President of the State unit of the sangha who led the activists, said that the Agricultural Department had abruptly suspended the supply of seeds even thought it had collected money from farmers and entered the quantity to be delivered in their passbooks. He said that he had come to know that the department had been forced to suspend supply owing to shortage of funds.

The Government had announced that seeds would be supplied with 75 per cent subsidy to all small and marginal farmers. The supply had to be suspended owing to lack of release of grants, he said. The dharna was withdrawn after the Headquarter Assistant to Deputy Commissioner H. Nagappa promised that the department would arrange for immediate supply of seeds.
