Farmers held in Bellary

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Farmers from Chaganur and Siriwar, under the banner of Chaganur-Siriwar Neeravari Bhoomi Rakshana Horata Samiti, who were squatting in the Deputy Commissioner's office intending to meet the Minister for Tourism Janardhan Reddy, were arrested by police around 11.30 p.m. on Friday.

The farmers, who intended to meet the Minister to reiterate that they were opposed to the acquisition of their irrigated land for constructing the new Bellary airport, came out in a procession from Durgamma temple in the city around 6 p.m.

Their programme came in the wake of reported statement of the Tourism Minister in the Legislative Council that none of the farmers were opposed to acquisition of land for the airport and that he was also not keen on forcible acquisition, according to reports appearing in a section of the print media.
