Farmer leaders seek ban on Bt brinjal

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha (KPRS) on Monday urged the Union Government not to accord permission for the commercial production of Bt brinjal in the country.

The KPRS activists led by district president Virupakshappa Tadkal and secretary Gouramma Patil staged a day-long protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here against the Centre’s move to introduce the genetically modified crop.

Accusing the Central Government of coming under the influence of American seed major Monsanto, which had been conducting research and development activities on Bt brinjal, the KPRS leaders said the Government was hurrying through the proposal to introduce the crop for commercial production without taking into consideration the apprehensions expressed by scientists and farmers.

They also submitted a memorandum in this regard to the district authorities.
