BELLARY: Passers-by on Kappgal Road here on Wednesday were drawn by the aroma in the air as students of Kittur Chennamma Girls High School were busy cooking a variety of dishes to show their culinary talent. The students were competing for prizes at the school-level competitions.

The variety of food items cooked by them ranged from snacks such as ‘churumuri’, ‘khara’ (mixture), toast, chakkuli, biscuit, chocolate, ‘bonda’, ‘masala vada,’ ‘nippats’ noodles and ‘mirchi’ to ‘sajje roti and badnekai yennagai’, masala rice, pulao, ‘paysa’, kheer, ‘gajar halwa’ and ‘holige’. Some students prepared traditional items such as ‘hasi mudde’, made of bajra, ‘ragi mudde’ and ‘jolada mudde’ with ‘uduka’.

All of them had brought utensils and ingredients as well as a stove each to cook. The items prepared were exhibited in nine classrooms of the school.

The judges appreciated their efforts, while tasting several preparations on offer.

“It is compulsory for all students to participate in the cooking competition held every year. This is to bring out hidden potential and also to instil confidence among them that they can survive in trying conditions. In turn, our students too participated with enthusiasm and interest. Teams of four students each were formed and they were asked to prepare an item of their choice. Prizes will be given to the first three winners in each class during the school day,” principal Kumudini told The Hindu.
