Enhanced subsidy

SHIMOGA: The Shimoga Zilla Panchayat has decided to increase the subsidy by 75 per cent on insecticide to control Brown Hopper disease, which affects standing paddy. President of the zilla panchayat H.C. Basavarajappa, who presided over a meeting here on Tuesday, said that the rate of subsidy for the purchase of the insecticide was earlier fixed at 50 per cent, but had been enhanced to 75 per cent after a discussion with the Deputy Commissioner on the extent of damage the disease could cause. In addition to the subsidy, those who lost 50 per cent and over of their crop to the disease would be paid compensation from the National Calamity Fund, he said. The compensation would be of Rs. 4,000 an hectare for loss of paddy and Rs. 6,000 an hectare for the loss of horticultural crops, he said. At the meeting, zilla panchayat members volunteered to contribute a month’s salary to the flood relief fund.
