Engineer from Belgaum receives bravery award

Belgaum: For selflessly risking his life to serve society, Rajesh Gopalrao Khatavkar from Belgaum city has been awarded the C.I.D. Gallantry Award, under the Physical Bravery category, instituted by Sony Entertainment.

Mr. Khatavkar, a civil engineer by profession and a social activist, is one of awardees selected from 8,000 nominations, and he received a gold medal, a certificate of honour and a Rs. 1 lakh in Mumbai on January19. The ceremony will be telecast at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Mr. Khatavkar exhibited exceptional courage when he prevented a bank robbery in broad daylight on December18, 2001. He caught one of the gang members, a man carrying a bag containing Rs. 4 lakh, and handed him over to the police.
