Ekikarana award conferred on Channamma Itagi

Minister Mahadeva Prasad felicitates Gangubai Hangal and Patil Puttappa

HUBLI: Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad conferred the "Suvarna Ekikarana Puraskar" on Channamma Vedamurthy Itagi of Hubli at her residence here on Saturday.

Ms. Channamma Itagi was unable to attend the award presentation ceremony held on November 1 owing to illness.

Visiting Hubli for the first time after becoming Minister, Mr. Mahadeva Prasad visited the house of Ms. Itagi on Saturday morning to confer the award and felicitated her. The award carries a gold medal and a citation.

Mr. Mahadeva Prasad said that he was fortunate to felicitate a person who had contributed to the unification of the State. He remembered the contributions of those who took part in the unification movement.

Ms. Channamma Itagi attributed the award to her late husband and freedom fighter Vedamurthy Itagi who actively took part in the unification movement.

She said it was Vedamurthy Itagi who took the lead in the movement and she actually played a supportive role. Ms. Channamma is the daughter of freedom fighter Andaneppa Doddameti. The family members of Channamma Itagi and a few officials were present on the occasion.

Later, the Minister visited the house of veteran journalist Patil Puttappa and felicitated him. During the interaction, Mr. Patil Puttappa asked the Minister to involve all stakeholders, including Horanadu Kannadigas, while organising the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana. The Minister also visited Sri Siddharoodh Math before going to Dharwad.


Earlier, the Minister visited the house of nonagenarian vocalist Gangubai Hangal and felicitated her. Ms. Hangal became nostalgic and recollected some momentous occasions in her life.

Mr. Mahadeva Prasad went around the Museum of Indian Classical Music and lauded the efforts of the Hangal Music Foundation. Founder of the foundation Manoj Hangal and president Baburao Hangal gave information to the Minister on certain rare musical instruments. On behalf of the foundation, a memorandum was submitted to the Minister seeking assistance for expanding its activities.
