District gears up for fifth sammelan

Udupi: President of the Udupi district Kannada Sahitya Parishath Ambatanaya Mudrady said on Tuesday that seminars and poets’ meet will be organised during the fifth district “Kannada Sahitya Sammelan” to be held at Nitte on December 30 and 31.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Mudrady said that the first seminar on “Ancient poets of Udupi district” would focus on the life and achievements of poets such as Arunaabja, Chadur Chandrama, and Hattiyangadi Rama Bhat.

Poets’ meet

Poets, including Dundiraj, Jayaram Karanth, Vasanth Bannady, Gururaj Marpalli, N.P. Shetty, Shubha Marvanthe, Susheela R. Rao, Ramesh Bhat, Ganeshprasad Pandelu and Jyoti Guruprasad, would participate in the poets’ meet to be held in the evening of December 30.

The topic for the December 31 morning session seminar would be “Societal literature” (“Samajamukhi Sahitya”), focussing on Vachana Sahitya, Dasa Sahitya and Janapada Sahitya, he said.

A seminar on “Women: contemporary challenges” would be there on the same day in which scholar Veena Bannanje would present a paper on “Culture and literature”, while scholar Madhavi Bhandary would present a paper on “Working woman”.

The afternoon session would focus on the works of Na. Mogasale, writer, who would also be the president of the sammelan, Mr. Mudrady said.


Former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily would felicitate 10 people for their contributions in various fields in the evening session. They are: A.G. Kodgi (agriculture and cooperatives); M. Ramachandra (literature and organisation); A. Eshwarayya (art criticism); Mohan Kotian (research); Ku. Go. (humour literature); Aroor Sarvotham Shet (Yakshagana arthadhari); B.C. Rao (harikatha), Jaggu Parav (“bhoota nritya” artiste); Keshav Koteshwara (social service); and Kalavati Dayananda (folk songs).

Home Minister V.S. Acharya will inaugurate the sammelan on December 30 while litterateur Go.Ru. Channabasappa will deliver the valedictory address on December 31.
