Separate function organised to mark Ambedkar’s death anniversary

Karwar: Dissidence in the Haliyal Block Congress Committee came to the fore on Saturday.

Block Congress committee president S.L Ghotnekar was to inaugurate a programme organised here by the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti to mark the death anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar.

He was scheduled to garland the statue of Ambedkar in a community hall near Yellapur naka at 3 p.m.

However, a group of Congress leaders, including members of the Haliyal Taluk Panchayat, held a programme to mark the occasion under the leadership of Janata Dal (Secular) leader at same venue in the morning.

They invited Janata Dal (S) leader V.D. Hegde, one-time protégé of R.V. Deshapande, president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, to garland Ambedkar’s statue.

President of the taluk panchayat Khakesha Mukanndar, chairman of the panchayat standing committee Satyajeet Giri, Umesh Bolashetty, Suresh Talawar, Santan Sawant, Basappa Madara and Shiraz Chalawadi were prominent among the Congress leaders who participated in the programme.

Later, these Congress leaders told presspersons that they had sent a right message across to the party high command by organising the programme.

Local Congress leaders were not trying to understand problems of people’s representatives. They had no inclination to solve the problems, they said.

They said that they would meet Mr. Deshapande on December 11 during his visit to Haliyal.
