Disqualify two councillors: JD(S)

Hundreds of Janata Dal (Secular) activists, led by president of the city municipal council Ambika Ravishankar and youth secretary of the State unit Raghu H.S., staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Thursday demanding the disqualification of two nominated councillors (BJP) of Holenarsipur who allegedly set fire to the box kept for submission of tenders.

In a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, the protesters said that the councillors, K.M. Shivakumar and Hemanth Kumar, set fire to the tender box kept in the TMC office in Holenarsipur on July 11.

On July 12, BJP members staged a dharna alleging that the Janata Dal (S) was behind the act. However, the police arrested Shivakumar and Hemanth Kumar and ITI student Kiran on the charge of setting fire to the box. All three were remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.

Mr. Raghu said that the TMC had invited tenders for 16 works at a total cost of Rs. 9 crore. The two councillors brought a contractor from Bangalore, Ravikumar, to apply for the tender. However, he put the application for the tender without the caution money deposit in the tender box. When Mr. Ravikumar informed the two councillors about his mistake, they set fire to the tender box. The tender box was to be opened on July 12.
