Raichur: The district unit of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike staged a dharna here on Friday demanding the district administration to order a probe into the death of an infant at birth at the District Civil Hospital on Thursday.

Activists led by Vinod Reddy, president of the city unit of the vedike, went in a procession and then staged a dharna on reaching the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

In the memorandum they submitted to the district administration, they said that the District Civil Hospital had refused to admit a pregnant woman unless she paid the prescribed fee.

Even when the hospital authorities were making the attendants of the pregnant woman complete the process of registration and pay the prescribed fee, the woman delivered the infant. It fell on to the ground and died immediately, said the memorandum.

According to the activists, the infant died due to the negligence of the doctors and nurses in the hospital.

The activists said in the memorandum that a probe should be ordered and the guilty should be punished.

Besides, action should be taken to set right found anomalies in the functioning of the District Civil Hospital, they added.
