It will encourage talented personalities exhibit their skills: Alkod

Raichur: The Minister in charge of the district, Hanumanthappa Alkod, stressed the need to celebrate zilla utsav as an annual event so as to remind people of the culture of the land.

He was speaking after inaugurating the zilla utsav at the District Stadium here on Friday night.

Rich culture

He said the district had a rich cultural background. Flanked by two rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra the district was also rich in agriculture. "We should not forget the history and culture of our land. It is the responsibility of all to protect the monuments and other valuable historical records," he said.

He said the zilla utsav was being observed for three days here after a gap of more than a decade. If the utsav was held annually, it would encourage talented personalities from various fields to exhibit their skills. It would also become a common platform for people from neighbouring States to showcase their talent.

Chief guests, N. Shankarappa, Chairman of the Backward Class Development Board; Manohar Maski, MLC; former Ministers and MLAs, Amaregouda Bayyapur (Lingsugur) and Muniyappa Muddappa (Kalmala); and A. Papa Reddy, Raichur MLA, spoke.

Mr. Shankarappa said the inaugural function had failed to draw the attention of the people as they were busy in religious rituals on account of Maha Shivaratri.

The district administration could have consulted elected representatives and other social and cultural organisations in the district before finalising the date for zilla utsav, he said.

Deputy Commissioner Tushar Girinath; N. Manjunath Prasad, Chief Executive Officer of the Raichur Zilla Panchayat; B. Govinda, Chairman of the Raichur Development Authority; B.A. Padmanayana, Superintendent of Police and V.B.Kithle, Additional Superintendent of Police, were present.

Sports events too

Later, cultural programmes were organised by various artistes.

The district administration has also organised sports events, including para-sailing and boating, for the public for three days from Friday as part of the utsav.
