CPI(M) opposes CEC action

HASSAN: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has criticised the suo motu recommendation by Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami seeking the removal of Election Commissioner Navin Chawla. The party has said the act would only affect the reputation of the Election Commission.

Releasing a copy of the statement issued by the Polit Bureau here on Sunday, CPI(M) leader V. Sukumar and Centre for Indian Trade Unions district president Dharmesh said the Election Commission played a vital role in ensuring a successful parliamentary democracy. The BJP and Congress, they said, had always appointed those whom they were favourably disposed to, to positions of power and responsibility. They said the members of the Election Commission should work together and internal dissension was inimical to the country’s interests. The leaders also sought a ban on nominating members for post-retirement assignments.
