Sandhya died after consuming poison, say the police

The girl fell ill on Saturday afternoon and was declared brought dead at hospital

Members of SFI and AIDSO question how she could lay her hand on poison

Davangere: Death of a 11-year-old girl on Saturday evening in Davangere district has sparked off a controversy with the girl’s parents and members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) demanding a CID probe into the incident.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil said that Sandhya was studying in seventh standard in Morarji Desai Residential School in Halavagulu village in Harpanahalli. After she fell ill in the afternoon, she was taken to Halavagilu hospital. Then, she was shifted to the Chigateri General Hospital in Davangere. However, she was declared brought dead.

According to the Superintendent of Police, Sandhya had committed suicide by consuming poison. The police said that preliminary investigation had revealed that Sandhya was depressed as she had been admitted to the residential school against her wishes. As she wanted to continue her schooling in her village, she did not want to be admitted to a residential school. So, the police suspect that it is a case of suicide.

On Sunday, a large number of students under the banner of the Students’ Federation of India and All India Democratic Students’ Organisation assembled near the mortuary in Chigateri hospital where the body of the girl was kept. The assembled students questioned as to how a 11-year-old could commit suicide.

They questioned the version of the police and asked as to how she could have laid her hands on poison to commit suicide. They demanded to know whether the warden or any other school authority was not present on the school premises when the girl allegedly drank the poison. They said that they suspected that the girl might have been subjected to physical torture. The SFI and AIDSO urged the Government to order a CID probe into the incident. The students organisations also alleged that the school lacked basic infrastructure. They said that the students were made to do physical work such as fetching water. The alleged that the callousness of the school authorities had led to the death of Sandhya. She could have been saved had the authorities been on the premises and taken care.

The family members of Sandhya said that she was not a weak minded person and the Government should find out the real reason for her death. They demanded a thorough inquiry into the incident and added that the guilty should be brought to justice.

The school authorities should take care and ensure that such incidents did not recur in future.
