MANGALORE: A two-MGD (million gallons a day) capacity water supply pipeline, which is under the surface of the stretch between Karavali Circle and Bendoorwell Circle, broke late on Saturday evening, flooding the basement of a nearby building and an apartment.

The pipeline broke at about 9.15 p.m. The pipeline is under the road which had been dug and re-laid a few days ago by the the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC). The top layer of tar on this stretch had been laid only yesterday.

After the pipeline broke, water gushed into the basement of Hotel Residency Gate building. It flooded a video and audio shop, and a restaurant. On the downstream of this building, water flooded the basement of Orchid Apartments.

G.V. Rajashekhar, executive engineer of the corporation, said that the pipeline had been laid many years ago to supply water from Thumbay vented dam to the city. The corporation officials had let water through it on Saturday to check the pipeline. It had now been stopped, he said. However, the over-one-hour flooding has damaged the road and affected many houses in the area.
