Patil Puttappa praises Sharana movement at a book release function

DHARWAD: The teachings of Basaveshwara who advocated for human rights in the 12th century itself should be brought to practice rather than just speaking about them, veteran journalist Patil Puttappa has said.

Mr. Puttappa releasing the book Basava And Human Rights written by Lohit Naikar at a function organised by “Sahitya Mantapa” of Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha here on Wednesday.

The veteran journalist said that attempts to malign the “Sharana movement” of 12th century were on the rise.

Mr. Puttappa expressed regret over attempts to distort the history pertaining to sharanas of the 12th century.

He said the teachings of Basaveshwara were in more practice among non-Lingayats than the Lingayats. The internal differences and conflicts among the Lingayats had affected the implementation of Basaveshwara’s teachings.

The Lingayats need to forget the internal differences to become true followers of Basaveshwara, he said.

Dr. Puttappa questioned Sri Shivayogi Swamiji of Muruga Math who was present in the programme on why the religious heads preaching Basveshwara’s ideology were attending programmes organised by Panchacharyas, who always defied Basaveshwara’s thoughts.

Principal of University College of Law C.S. Patil said that the much discussed issues of the present day namely freedom of expression, right to life and women’s rights were raised by Basaveshwara 800 years ago.

Responding to Mr. Puttappa’s question, Sri Shivayogi Swamiji said that their participation in such programmes was because of the pressure by the devotees and there was no change in the math’s stand on Basaveshwara.

Writer felicitated

The swamiji felicitated the writer Dr. Naikar on the occasion.

The book release function began with “vachana sangeet” by Mrutyunjay Shettar who was accompanied by Nandikeshwar Gurav (tabla) and Arjun Vathara (harmonium). Mohan Nagammanavar welcomed the gathering.

S.V. Hegadal proposed a vote of thanks.
