Bhuvaneshwari statue to come up in Bangalore

It will be built at a cost of Rs. 25 crore

The Government will install a statue of Bhuvaneshwari (Kannada deity) in Bangalore that will match in stature and height of the Statue of Liberty in New York and the Buddha statue at Hussein Sagar in Hyderabad. To commemorate the 77 {+t} {+h} Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, the statue will be constructed at an approximate cost of Rs. 25 crore.

This was announced by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who inaugurated the three-day sammelan here on Friday. Held previously in 1915, 1916, and 1970, the event is being held in the capital after 41 years.

Enlisting the projects launched and funds allocated for the development of Kannada through its agencies such as academies, other Kannada authorities, and the autonomous Kannada Sahitya Parishat, the Chief Minister announced that the Government would release Rs. 5 crore for the construction of a Samskruti Bhavan to mark the 77 {+t} {+h} sammelan. In an effort to help writers who could not bear the cost of publishing their works, the Government would establish an endowment of Rs. 10 crore with the parishat for helping them get their first publication realised without any financial burden. The parishat would work out the modalities for the project, he added.

Responding to the observations made by parishat president Nallur Prasad R.K. on the need to follow the tradition of adopting resolutions on various sensitive issues pertaining to the State and its culture and language, Mr. Yeddyurappa suggested that if the sammelan passes pragmatic resolutions, the Government would not hesitate to consider them.

Referring to the second Vishwa Kannada Sammelan proposed to be held in March for three days in Belgaum, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the Government had released Rs. 2 crore for the construction of the Samskruti Bhavan and another Rs. 10 crore for infrastructure development.
