BPL families stage protest in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office

Madhyawarthi Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti organised it

Belgaum: A large number of families possessing Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards staged a protest demonstration on Monday in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office condemning the alleged irregularities in distribution of ration cards by the Department of Food and Civil Supplies in the district.

Members of BPL families from across the city and neighbouring villages, under the banner of the Madhyawarthi Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti, participated in the protest and shouted slogans against the Government. Activists of the samiti Deepak Dalvi, Manohar Kinekar and B.I. Patil were among those who were present.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, the MMES alleged that the survey conducted for identifying beneficiaries for distribution of BPL and Above Poverty Line (APL) cards was not fair and full of mistakes.

According to them several BPL families were issued APL cards and vice versa.

Besides, there are errors in names, surnames and addresses of a large number of card holders, they pointed out.

Bringing in the language issue, the MMES office-bearers demanded the district administration to distribute ration cards in Marathi and comply with the Official Language Act of Karnataka, 1963 and 1981.

In Belgaum and Khanapur taluks, they said, over 60 per cent of the people speak in Marathi and so the script in ration cards should be in Marathi, Kannada and English.
