DHARWAD: Tension prevailed at the Farmers’ Hostel of University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) here on Saturday when BJP workers clashed with the police protesting against what they termed highhandedness of a police officer while counting of votes was on.

The incident occurred when trends favoured BJP and Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai and party candidate Pralhad Joshi proceeded towards the media centre. Some BJP workers too rushed towards the media centre. Policemen asked them to stop raising slogans and prevented them from entering the centre. However, when the former councillor Yallappa Baddi tried to proceed towards the media centre, Police Inspector Tulajappa Sulpi stopped him.

An argument erupted between Mr. Baddi and Mr. Sulpi. The inspector, who held Mr. Baddi, took him towards the counting centre. Seeing this, the BJP workers rushed towards Mr. Sulpi and started arguing with him. In the melee, Shivanna Haliyal, BJP office-bearer, allegedly attacked Mr. Sulpi, which resulted in the police dragging him away.

The BJP workers raised slogans against the police accusing them of highhandedness, while Mr. Basavaraj Bommai and Mr. Joshi tried to pacify them. Mr. Bommai and Mr. Joshi objected to the police action of dragging away the BJP office-bearer and sought action against the inspector. Police Commissioner N. Shivakumar said that action would be taken against those responsible for the incident after an inquiry.
