Members of the BJP wanted to stage a protest demonstration in Hyderabad

Bidar: Several hundred workers of the Bidar district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were arrested by Chiragpalli police in Zaheerabad taluk of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. The workers were proceeding towards Novotel in Hyderabad where they wanted to stage protest.

Many BJP legislators of the Minister for Tourism G. Janaradhan Reddy faction are holidaying in Novotel for the past 10 days. The legislators have been demanding the change of leadership in Karnataka.

The BJP workers were led by the former Humnabad MLA Subhash Kallur. They were going in cars to Hyderabad when the police blocked their way at Zaheerabad which is about 30 km from Bidar city. The workers had intended to stage a demonstration in front of Novotel to urge the legislators staying at the resort to return to their respective constituencies and take up relief work in flood-hit villages in north Karnataka.

Mr. Subhash Kallur told The Hindu that the workers were stopped by the police at Zaheerabad in the morning and the leaders requested the police to allow them to continue their journey to Hyderabad. But, the police did not listen and stopped their vehicles.

Mr. Kallur said the workers made numerous appeals to the police but the police said that they did not have orders from their higher officers to let them go.

At around 1.30 p.m., the former MLA said that the BJP leader addressed a gathering on National Highway 9 passing through Zaheerabad.

Later on, the members celebrated the birthday of the former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani at Zaheerabad and distributed sweets to the people.

On noticing the gathering on the road, police arrested them. Later, they were released. Mr. Kallur claimed that 2,000 people comprising BJP leaders and supporters joined them to proceed to Hyderabad.

Mr. Kallur said the police personnel were deployed at Zaheerabad and also at Sangareddy district and other places which are on the way to Hyderabad to prevent leaders from Bidar going to Novotel.

Along with Mr. Kallur, BJP leaders Shankargouda Patil, Shakuntala Beldale and others were present.
