BJP wins Raichur Lok Sabha seat

Raichur: S. Pakkirappa of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Raichur Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 30,636 votes against his nearest Congress rival Raja Venkatappa Naik, as per the results announced by the Election Commission here on Saturday. With this victory, BJP has not only stormed one of the Congress bastions but has also relegated Janata Dal (Secular) to the third position.

It is for the first time that BJP has won the Raichur Lok Sabha seat. Mr. Pakkirappa, relative of Minister for Health and Family Welfare B. Sriramulu, contested election for the first time. Party workers are pleased with his victory.

The BJP obtained a clear lead of more than 10,000 votes over the Congress at the end of first round itself. Except in three Assembly segments (Shorapur, Shahapur and Lingsugur), the party maintained its lead in other five Assembly segments (Yadgir, Raichur Rural, Raichur City, Manvi and Deodurga) till the end of 18th and the last round of counting of votes.

In fact, Mr. Pakkirappa was a dummy candidate. But, later he remained in the fray when the party asked its official candidate and the former Minister Raja Amareshwara Naik to withdraw his nomination at the time of scrutiny.Of the 6,82,264 votes, BJP polled 46.38 per cent and Congress secured 41.89 per cent of the total votes polled. JD (S) polled 4.29 per cent votes.

The details of votes polled are: Pakkirappa (BJP) - 3,16,450 votes; Venkatappa Naik (Congress) - 2,85,814; Devanna Naik (JDS) - 29,317; Shivakumar (BSP) - 11,849; and V.H. Master - 7,691; V. Mudukappa Naik - 8,412; K. Mudukappa Naik - 7,862; K. Somashekar - 14,869 (Independents).
