BELLARY: Veteran film actor and theatre artiste B.V. Radha will be conferred the State-level Kanaka Ratna award by the Kanaka Gurupeetha at Tinthini in Gulbarga district.

Folk singer Siddappa Meti from Yadgir district and poet Jambanna Amarchinta from Raichur have also been selected for the Halumatha Bhaskar and Sidda Shri awards respectively.

The awards will be presented by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa during the three-day Halumatha Samskruti Vaibhava to be held at Tinthini from January 12 to 14.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Sri Siddaramananda Puri Swamiji of the gurupeetha said that this was the first time that notable contributions to the fields of literature, culture, and social service, especially from the backward classes, had been recognised.

He said that depending upon the resources, the number of awards would be increased every year.

A committee headed by the former Minister B.T. Lalita Naik had selected the awardees, he added.
