Raichur: Members of the district unit of the Federation of Karnataka Autorickshaw Drivers’ Union staged a dharna here on Thursday demanding that the Government take action to improve roads in Raichur city, open more LPG outlets and announce a package for the welfare of autorickshaw drivers.

The members, led by Khaja Hussain, president of the district unit of the union, came in a procession and parked their autorickshaws in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office as a mark of protest and staged dharna.

In a memorandum, addressed to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, submitted to Deputy Commissioner Adoni Syed Saleem, they said that the Government had not done anything to improve roads in the city. It had not initiated any measure to protect interests of autorickshaw drivers. No package has been announced for the welfare of autorickshaw drivers, they said.

They demanded that the Government initiate measures to improve roads in the city and announce a package to facilitate provision of medical and insurance benefits to the drivers. The Government should allot houses to all autorickshaw drivers coming from poor economic background and issue BPL cards to them.
