Ambareesh loses second election

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Kannada film actor M.H. Ambareesh, who was seeking re-election from Mandya, failed to weave his magic on the voters like in the past as the former Minister and Janata Dal (S) candidate N. Cheluvarayaswamy won the election by a margin of 23,500 votes. The Janata Dal (S) strongman comfortably won the seat, putting a full stop to Mr. Ambareesh’s plans of making it to Parliament for the fourth consecutive term. This is second straight defeat for Mr Ambareesh since last year. The actor was drubbed in the Assembly election from Srirangapatna in May 2008.

With his second defeat, it appears that the charisma of Mr. Ambareesh, who was undecided about his contest till the last minute following his alleged differences with the party, is eroding in the Vokkaliga belt. Of 10,31,703 votes polled, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy secured 3,84,443 votes while Ambareesh bagged 3,60,943 votes. The BJP’s attempt to wrest the seat went in vain as its candidate L.R. Shivarame Gowda, who quit the Congress to contest the polls, got 1,44,875 votes.
