459 in fray for ZP elections

HASSAN: As many as 459 candidates have filed their nomination for the first phase of the zilla panchayat elections to be held in the district on December 19 while 1,298 nominations have been received for the taluk panchayat elections, according to sources in the district administration.

The number of applications filed for the 40 zilla panchayat seats in the eight taluks is as follows: Alur 15, Arkalgud 64, Arsikere 63, Belur 33, Channarayapatna 78, Hassan 70, Holenarsipur 99 and Sakleshpur 37.

The party-wise break-up of the applications is as follows: Janata Dal (Secular) 137, Congress 133, Bharatiya Janata Party 55, Bahujan Samaj Party 27, Samajwadi Party 26, All India Progressive Janata Dal 8, Janata Dal (United) 1, Republican Party of India 3 and independents 69.

The number of applications filed from the 150 taluk panchayat constituencies in various taluks is as follows: Alur 69, Arkalgud 144, Arsikere 297, Belur 181, Channarayapatna 165, Hassan 183, Holenarsipur 176 and Sakleshpur 83.

Party-wise break-up

The party-wise break-up of the applications is as follows: Janata Dal (S) 466, Congress 432, Bharatiya Janata Party 130, Bahujan Samaj Party 76, Samajwadi Party 65, All India Progressive Janata Dal 11, Janata Dal (U) 3, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha 1 and independents 114.

Prominent leaders of the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) in the district are in the fray.

Confusion

Interestingly, the Janata Dal (S) has issued the `B' form to Balakrishna Murthy and Shivananjappa from the Salagame constituency in Hassan taluk and A.E. Chandrashekar and B.S. Shivalingappa from the Bagur constituency in Channarayapatna taluk.
