12 Padma award-winners from State felicitated

The Governor lauds Bangalore University for organising the function

BANGALORE: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi on Thursday felicitated 12 people from the State who received Padma awards during the period 2004-06. The function was organised by Bangalore University at the Raj Bhavan.

Twenty-nine people from the State have received the awards in the past three years. Some of them could not attend the function since it was arranged at short notice.

University praised

Mr. Chaturvedi lauded Bangalore University and its Vice-Chancellor, M.S. Thimmappa, for deciding to felicitate those who have brought laurels to the State through their outstanding work in various fields. The award-winners have selflessly contributed to society and their achievements will be remembered by future generations, he said. The Governor felicitated G. Padmanabhan, former director, Indian Institute of Science (Padma Bhushan); T.S. Prahlad former Director, National Aerospace Laboratories; and B.L. Srinivas Murthy, social worker (Padma Shri). They received the awards for 2004.

Twelve from the State Indian cricket team captain Rahul Dravid; the former Chief Justice of India M.N. Venkatachalaiah; the noted saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath; Samuel Paul, social worker; Syed Shah Mohammed Hussain, writer and educationist; the former Chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. N.R. Mohanty; cardiologist Devi Prasad Shetty; scientist M. Vijayan; and V. Prakash, Director, Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore received the Padma Shri in 2004.

Eight persons from the State received the awards in 2005. But only three of them turned up for the felicitation function: Narasimhiah Seshagiri, well-known computer scientist (Padma Bhushan); Bhagvatulu Dattaguru, scientist, and Mahadevappa Madappa, farm scientist (both Padma Shri). Others who received Padma awards in 2005 were T.R. Satish Chandran, former Governor of Goa; Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro Ltd.; Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson and Managing Director, Biocon India Ltd.; Kavita Subramanian, musician; and Anil Kumble, cricketer. Ten from the State received Padma awards this year and seven of them were present at the function: K.P.P. Nambiar, industrialist; Nandan M. Nilekani, President of Infosys Technologies; Devaki Jain, social worker; and N.S. Ramaswamy, social worker and former Director, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, (Padma Bhushan); Devappagowda Chinniah, former Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology; and Sudha Murthy, engineer and social worker (Padma Shri).

Madhav Gadgil, environmentalist; Obaid Siddiqui, scientist; and P.S. Appu, retired civil servant who was Director of the National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, did not attend the function.

Prof. Thimmappa welcomed the gathering.
