`Verdict unscientific'

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: Activists belonging to the Taluk Raitha Hitarakshana Samithi and Progressive Organisations of H.D. Kote have described the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal as unscientific and an affront to the country's democratic system.

They staged a dharna near the Kabini reservoir on Saturday.

The activists submitted a memorandum urging the Government not to officially notify the final award and instead extend to one year the time for filing the review petition. Taking exception to the monthly calendar to ensure regular water release, the activists criticised the tribunal members for "ignoring" global climatic changes occurring due to environmental pollution.

They pointed out that Cauvery was the only reliable source of drinking water and industrial use for Bangalore, Mysore and other towns in the region.

The tribunal should have allowed 50 tmcft. of water to meet the exigencies of the urban demand, they said.
