`Police protecting personnel who tortured youth'

Special correspondent

GULBARGA: The Gulbarga District Valmiki Nayak Samaj has charged the district police of protecting the personnel who tortured a youth in Surpur police station.

President of the samaj Nandakumar Malipatil told presspersons here on Wednesday that that three police personnel, Inspector Kattimani, Sub Inspector Mallappa Bidari and Constable Ramulu, who were suspended on the charge of torturing Yamanappa D. Jalahalli, a week ago were booked under minor charges, arrested and released on bail.

He said that the three police personnel should have been charged under the Prevention of Atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Tribes Act, which was a non-bailable offence, and sent to judicial custody. The police with the intention of safeguarding the guilty police personnel had booked them under minor charges, he alleged. The police had not filed cases against two police constables who were also allegedly involved in the incident, he charged.

The samaj will hold a dharna in Gulbarga city on Friday.
