Officials urged to do more to educate people on consumer rights

HASSAN: Inaugurating a function to mark World Consumer Day here on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda said the day should be devoted to educating consumers and creating awareness on their rights.

He regretted that consumers were being cheated and said officials played a vital role in educating consumers.

He advised officials to work honestly and solve the problems of consumers and added that there was a need for more consumer forums.

The programme was jointly organised by the district administration, Food and Civil Supplies Department and the District Consumer Forum.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamaadar said as long as consumers remained ignorant of their rights, they were bound to be cheated by traders. He advised people not to purchase anything in a hurry. "Even educated people are cheated because they go on a buying spree and often purchase what they don't need," he said. The legal process took its own course and creating awareness among consumers was the best way to protect them.

District Consumer Forum president M.K. Sripathi told people to ensure the ISI Arg mark on commodities before purchase, to obtain a receipt on every purchase, not to be lured by advertisements or purchase goods that were past their expiry date. He asked people to beware of those selling goods in the black market. Inform the Food and Civil Supplies Department of discrepancies, he added.

Acting president of the zilla panchayat Kamakshi Raju and T.S. Nirmala, H.S. Mallesh Gowda, from AVK College and KSRTC Divisional Controller Ganganna Gowda were present.

The Weights and Measures Department organised an exhibition to educate consumers. Food and Civil Supplies Department Deputy Director D. Hombali Gowda welcomed the gathering.
