World meet on coping with chronic diseases

Conference to focus on strategies to assist chronically ill patient cope with the non-terminal disease

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Department of Psychology and Parapsychology in Andhra University will organise an International Conference on Coping with Chronic Diseases (ICCCD) on Friday and Saturday.

The conference would focus on strategies involved in assisting the chronically ill patient cope with the non-terminal disease and life effectively, according to the ICCCD Director K. Madhu. "Chronic diseases may be terminal like cancer, AIDS, etc., or non-terminal like diabetes, arthritis, and asthma.

The strategies, based on the psycho-biosocial model of health and disease and adapted to the Indian conditions would examine the role of the physician, family members of the patient, particularly the spouse in providing assistance in coping effectively with the disease. Techniques of empowering the patient to adopt a self-care approach were also discussed,'' he said. Participants in the conference included physicians and psychologists from the United Kingdom, the US, different states of India and specialists in the city.
