A massive rally was organised by workers, under the aegis of various trade unions, from the Saraswathi Park to the Collectorate on Tuesday as part of the nation-wide Satyagraha to protest against the ‘anti-labour’ policies of the Central and the State governments.

The protesters were stopped by the police, who were present in large numbers at Jagadamba Junction, from proceeding further. The police arrested some of the trade union leaders and workers but the others managed to break the police cordon and make their way to the Collectorate junction.

Leaders and member of CITU, AITUC, YSRTU, IFTU, INTUC, HMS and other unions participated in large numbers and raised slogans denouncing the government on its privatisation plans and to sell equity in PSUs to foreign companies and other anti-labour policies.

A tense situation prevailed for sometime there as the protesters were prevented from entering the Collectorate by the police, who were present in large numbers.

The main demands of the workers include: implementation of the Supreme Court guidelines on ‘equal pay for equal work’, regularisation of contract workers, implementation of minimum wages, extension of social security to unorganised workers and to make a provision for the same in the budget.

A large number of trade union leaders were taken into custody by the police.
