Volkswagen deal: Yanamala critical of Government

Correspondent

KAKINADA: The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and former Finance Minister, Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, has come down heavily on the Government for what he termed as a shady deal allegedly involving the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, himself.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, he alleged that not only the Chief Minister and the Industries Minister, but several other Congress leaders were involved in the `deal' and wanted the file relating to the clearance of equity payment to a Delhi-based company on behalf of Volkwagen to be made public.

State's prestige at stake

"It has a direct impact on the State's prestige and also on the investments in the industrial sector that have a bearing on the economy. The Chief Minister should not brush it aside as a small affair but should prove his sincerity and innocence by placing the vital documents, including the equity payment file, before the public. Democratic norms stipulate that there should not be any secret deals as such," Mr Ramakrishnudu remarked, expressing concern over the current state of affairs.

Stating that the discussions with Volkswagen were started during the Telugu Desam regime and that he along with the Industries Minister, Vidyadhara Rao, had visited Germany and held detailed discussions with the directors of that company, he said the former Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, also held several meetings on the subject.

Mr Ramakrishnudu said that nowhere in the country was a separate agency created on behalf of a foreign company. In fact, he alleged that it was a precedent, probably set, for the sake of facilitating kickbacks.

He wanted the Government to make public the names of the board of directors of `Vasishta Wahan,' the Delhi-based company and when it was registered. Pointing out that the Chief Minister was trying to paint a picture that he had no knowledge about the registration of `Vasishta Wahan,' he said the truth would come out if the file was made public.
