VMC to pay L&T only after water reaches Kanithi reservoir

VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 24. The Municipal Corporation hopes that Larsen and Toubro will be able to complete the project of bringing the Godavari waters from Rajahmundry to Visakhapatnam by early August.

Speaking to newspersons here on Saturday, the Municipal Commissioner, N. Srikanth, said the project, scheduled for completion by July 15, was getting delayed.

No light on reasons

He was not aware of the reasons for the delay. He denied reports that the VMC had to pay Rs.1.28 crore a month to L&T from July 15 itself whether or not water was made available. "We need to pay only from the day L&T lets water into the Kanithi balancing reservoir. The VMC will then draw the water and store it in Meghadrigadda reservoir till November 15.''

The corporation would complete its works like reservoirs, filtration plant, pipelines, etc., by November 15 and supply the Godavari waters to citizens.

It would increase water charges from Rs. 60 to Rs. 100 a month only from the day Godavari water is supplied to the people.

Mr. Srikanth said the underground drainage scheme completed at a cost of Rs. 14 crores was being used only to an extent of 40 per cent.

"We want to reduce the drainage connection fees and sort out other problems to encourage more people to take connections and make optimum use of the scheme.''

Flyover at Asilmetta

A flyover near Asilmetta junction to reduce traffic congestion was being planned, he said. It would have no problems in widening Jail Road. The VMC could take over the prison land to widen the road as per the master plan. He said he had visited most of the divisions in the city and found sanitation to be the major problem. "We are planning to increase dumping yards so that vehicles can make more trips and carry more garbage. Night sanitation will be continued on main roads.''

The Commissioner felt the need to de-silt drains at several places to avoid inundation of low-lying areas.
