`Untouchability still rampant'

MACHILIPATNAM, FEB. 26. The Chairman of the SC/ST Commission, K. Punnaiah, said here on Thursday that the Krishna district administration and police department should be more careful in dealing with atrocities against and cases of harassment of SCs and STs.

Since 1998, 37 cases of rape or murder of SCs and STs were registered in the district and he said it was regrettable that most of them were finalised through compromise without the concerned courts being approached. Cases of rape and harassment of SCs and STs came under the purview of lok adalats, he said.

Untouchability was still in force in 47 mandals of the 49 mandals in Guntur district he said adding that the commission strongly opposed construction of exclusive Sri Venkateswara Swamy temples in SC colonies.
