Two of dacoit gang arrested

VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 17. Two members of a Kolkata-based highway dacoit gang were nabbed by the city police on Thursday.

After arresting Raju Shaik and Ismail Shaik near V.S. Krishna Government College, the police recovered a countrymade 8 mm pistol, two cartridges and one .303 magazine and material like reel cable piece packet containing potassium chloride, antimony sulphide and red phosphorus, black powder and other material used for preparing bombs.

The Commissioner of Police, V.S.K. Kaumudi, told reporters that their modus operandi was to waylay lorries at isolated places on the highway by blasting explosives, overpower the lorry crew and later drive the vehicle to a godown located at Bada Bazaar in Kolkata.

One Munna Khan was said to be the don of the gang, comprising 40 to 50 dacoits. Once the lorry reached the godown, they would unload the consignment and lorry spares.

Mr. Kaumudi said that teams would be despatched to Orissa and West Bengal to get information on the gang. The murder case of a driver belonging to Visakhapatnam at Kharagpur some time ago would be reopened due to suspicion that the gang members might have been involved in the killing.
