Truckers pledge support to protest plan

VIJAYAWADA, AUG. 14. Extending its solidarity with the proposed indefinite strike by the All India Motor Transport Congress on August 21, the Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners Association has asked its members to stop booking loads for distances exceeding 1,000 km from August 17.

In a series of guidelines circulated to the members, the association general secretary, M.V. Subba Rao, has asked the members to stop accepting loads for distances less than 1,000 km from August 18 which should be followed by a total stoppage of booking loads the next day.

Booking agents

The lorry and transport company owners as well as the goods booking agents had been asked to boycott all their operations from 6 a.m. on August 21, coinciding with the indefinite strike call given by the All India Motor Transport Congress.

The lorry owners are demanding, among other things, that the Government scrap the service tax imposed on the lorry owners in the recent budget, desist from its moves to condemn the more than eight-year-old vehicles, stop collection of toll on the national highways and take steps to check the frequent hikes in diesel prices.
