Telangana day celebrations justified

VIJAYAWADA, AUG. 21. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, has justified the party's stand in celebrating the Telangana liberation day as a State function as it gives an occasion to explain about the sacrifices made by the people for liberating Telangana to the younger generation.

In a guarded reaction to queries about the party's stand on the formation of a separate Telangana State, Mr. Naidu told a press conference here on Saturday that the BJP's stand on separate statehood to the region was consistent from the beginning. It was up to the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, which entered into a poll pact during the previous elections to sort out the issue. "We have a clear stand on the issue. Let the Congress and the TRS to decide about the issue," he said.

Welfare schemes hailed

Welcoming the State Government decision to announce a series of welfare schemes to different sections, he, however, said that there was still a long way to go to achieve all the promises made to the people. Asked about the BJP's Karnataka unit's opposition to release of water to the State, he said that each State would have its own priorities when it came to water.
