Teachers drawing UGC scales seek a fair deal

HYDERABAD: The All-India Federation of University & College Teachers' Organisations (AIFUCTO) has sought merger of 50 per cent of basic pay as dearness pay to all university and college teachers drawing UGC scales as per the recommendations of Union Government.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, the federation general secretary, B. Vijay Kumar wanted implementation of the recommendations in all States with effect from April 1, 2004. He also demanded the payment of unpaid arrears on pay revision of 1996 scales to aided college teachers in the State.

The federation demanded restoration of democratic governance of universities and to do away with what it described as academic bureaucracy.

Mr. Kumar clarified that the cadre of Readers was same in colleges and universities as per the UGC regulations and Readers in college were in no way inferior to those in universities as `reported in a section of media'.

Office-bearers of the Federation of College Teachers' Association, who were present at the press meet, urged the Government to address their long- pending problems.
