TDP to highlight Congress `failures' on I-Day

VIJAYAWADA, AUG.14. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) will celebrate Independence Day in a novel way by highlighting the "burdens" heaped upon the common man by the Congress party which is in power at the State and the Centre.

The party released a poster with a list of recent decisions that adversely affected the life of the common man.

Poster released

The poster titled "Independence Day gifts to the people from the Congress," claimed that the decisions of the Centre to increase prices of petroleum products three times in three months would put an additional burden of Rs. 3,000 crores on the people. The State Government on its part imposed an additional burden of Rs. 100 crores on the people by increasing power tariff by 8.34 paise per unit. The poster hauled up the Left parties for being silent on the "anti-people" decisions of the Governments. It also criticised the Congress for going back on promises it made before the elections.

The charges

Speaking to reporters, the Former MP, Ambati Brahmanaiah, former APCOB chairman and district TDP president, T.D. Janardhana Rao, former MLA, Yelamanchali Nageswara Rao, and others said the increase of the diesel and petrol prices would have an impact on the prices of all essential commodities while the farming community which uses diesel for pumping irrigation water would be hard hit.

The moratorium on loans had eroded the credit worthiness of the farmers and shattered the economy at the grass root level. Inflation was on the rise and there was a marked increase in the price of essential commodities. "The Prime Minister and the Finance Minister are both noted economists, but they are not able to take steps to contain the prices and stop the inflation from spiralling," they said.
