TDP functionary's house burgled

SURYAPET (NALGONDA DT.), FEB. 26. Dacoits struck at a Telugu Desam district committee member in Krishnanagar colony near the bus stand here in the early hours of Thursday and made away with Rs. 52,000 in cash and gold ornaments worth Rs. 88,000, according to the Sub-Inspector, E. Srinivasa Reddy.

He said a four-member gang broke open the doors of the TDP member, Godala Ranga Reddy's house with rocks while 10 of his family members were fast asleep, after having just returned from Khammam.

Mr. Reddy woke up on hearing the commotion and tried to attack the intruders with an axe. However, two of them, who narrowly escaped Mr. Reddy's axe, hit him with a stone, injuring him and forcing him to give up the fight.

The dacoits then ransacked the house, slapped Mrs. Reddy and relived her of her ornaments. They also took the cupboard key at knifepoint and took away Rs. 52,000 and 20 tolas of gold ornaments.

Meanwhile, Mr. Reddy's son, who was in another bedroom, woke up and called the police on his mobile. A police team immediately swung into action but the gang escaped on hearing the police siren. The police team led by the SI launched a combing operation for the dacoits.

Police suspect the hand of a Stuartpuram gang behind the dacoity. They were reportedly clad only in underwear and conversed in Telugu.

The Additional Superintendent of Police, Prakash Reddy, inspected the spot this afternoon.
