TDP calls Congress meeting a `sham'

HYDERABAD, MARCH 17. The Telugu Desam Party has termed Wednesday's public meeting a `sham' and that it was organised only for the AICC president and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, and the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to praise each other in public.

At a press conference here on Thursday, the TDP leaders -- Ummareddy Venkateswarlu and Kadiam Srihari -- said it was a pity that such a gathering of Congress party bigwigs did not speak a word about the problems of people at large and how they proposed to go about solving them.

Funds diverted

Mr. Venkateswarlu wondered in what capacity Ms. Sonia Gandhi had participated in a string of official functions. He alleged that the public meeting was organised by diverting funds meant for the `Velugu' programme to mobilise people. Several Velugu project leaders in the districts had admitted that they were acting on orders from higher-ups.
