The toddy-like liquid oozing out of the tree has become a local wonder. The villagers have started prayers to the odd tree viewing it as a `protector'

KARIMNAGAR: Tamarind tree and toddy? Well, some heady concoction this! An old and fully grown tamarind tree bursting with raw fruit is the centre of attraction in Gundaram village of Illanthakunta mandal, drawing the attention of villagers and neighbouring villages.

It has been oozing out some liquid resembling toddy from one of its branches and has now become the object of veneration. People have begun coming in large numbers to see and offer prayers to this mysterious tree and collect the `sacred liquid' as `prasadam.' This strange phenomenon occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Initially, there was heavy flow of liquid from the branch but on Monday, it was reduced to a trickle. People began applying vermilion and turmeric powder to the tree and offered incense sticks and coconuts.

Swamy's `blessings'

Seventy-year-old Kistavva said that she had never seen such a mystery in her entire life. She claimed that it was the `blessings' of Sri Veera Brahmendra Swamy as he had in one of his prophetic predictions stated that a toddy-type of liquid would come out of a tamarind tree and that it would cure all ailments of people.

Local temple priest Ch.Hanumantha Rao chipped in: "It is just a mystery and not any supernatural power. I had seen toddy ooze out of a neem tree but this is the first time I am seeing toddy coming out of a tamarind tree."

Some villagers said the tamarind tree liquid was bitter in taste. "Immediately after tasting the toddy, we are feeling as if the liquid had cleaned our mouth like a freshner,'' a villager added.
