TIRUPATI: The Executive Council of Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) has approved the institution of six chairs of excellence to promote knowledge on various subjects. The council met at the varsity campus here on Thursday, when it approved certain major decisions, including some controversial ones.

Of the six chairs, five will be in the schools attached to the College of Arts and Sciences and one in the College of Engineering. The chairs, which would be maintained from self-generated funds, were meant to catalyse the process of promoting knowledge in higher learning.

Other major decisions were to provide weather-proof painting to the Srinivasa auditorium at a cost of Rs.10 lakhs and modernising the tennis court complex with Rs.5.15 lakhs.

Contentious decision

However, what has raised many an eyebrow is the decision to elevate the post of the plant biotechnologist working in the Department of Biotechnology as an assistant professor. In fact, the non-sanctioned post was created in 1997 with a consolidated pay of Rs.6,000, which was hiked to Rs.10,000 in April this year.

Further, at a time when 270 posts were lying idle and 54 of them bogged down in legal wrangles, the `elevation' of a non-sanctioned post has come as a shock for those awaiting appointment or regularisation for years.

The meet approved the Rs.8 lakh work pertaining to the Physics Department extension building, though it was said to have been quoted at an excess of 9.9 per cent.
