Surgical innovation

HYDERABAD, MARCH 11. Doctors at the Global hospitals have successfully performed hysterectomy on a 27-year-old woman suffering from von Willebrand disease, a bleeding disorder.

The surgery was undertaken with continuous infusion of low dose of Factor 8 in which she was deficient.

According Shailesh R.Singh, haemotologist, the innovation had reduced the surgery cost by 50 per cent as the use of factors had been halved. A patient undergoing a major procedure requires 20,000 to 25,000 units of imported factor concentrate, each unit costing Rs.6 to Rs.12 depending on purity.

The Managing Director of Global Hospitals, K.Ravindranath, said laparoscopic procedure (key-hole surgery) and the use of ultrasonic knife had contributed to minimising blood loss.
